OI Defines Cloud Computing

What’s this “cloud” everyone keeps talking about?

With cloud computing, data and programs are accessed and stored over the Internet instead of on your computer’s hard drive. “The Cloud” is just a metaphor for the Internet. Remember the days of flowcharts and presentations, in which the Internet was a big, puffy, white cloud accepting connections and doling out information as it floated in midair? Thus the name, “cloud.”

We at OI, Inc. have moved past hard drive storage and flash drives and into “the cloud.” With cloud computing, information is easily accessed from any location with Internet access, and OI is far from the only business moving to “the cloud.” The shift from traditional software models to the Internet has been steadily gaining momentum over the past 10 years. With cloud computing, businesses are saved from expensive and complicated software.

Cloud computer programmers are making advancements daily. The next decade of cloud computing promises new ways to collaborate through mobile devices. Today’s innovations in cloud computing are making business applications even more mobile and collaborative, similar to popular consumer apps like Facebook and Twitter. With Cloud computing, keeping up with your work is as easy as keeping up with your personal life on Facebook.

Not only is cloud computing easier and less expensive to use than traditional measures, it’s also a very safe and secure way to share information. Businesses are running all kinds of apps in the cloud, like customer relationship management (CRM), HR, accounting, and much more. Some of the world’s largest companies moved their applications to the cloud after rigorously testing the security and reliability of its infrastructure.

This month, OI will continue to highlight the advantages of cloud computing and reporting as well as the advantages of our green initiative. Check back with our website for further information.
